Papaya steaks

Ingredients

2 Tbsp tamari 

1 tsp sesame oil

2 Tbsp sheet or wine vinegar 

Pinch of salt and pepper

1/4 tsp paprika 

1/8 tsp Chinese five spice 

1/4 tsp liquid smoke

1 Tbsp nutritional yeast 

1 Tbsp rice malt syrup

Pinch chipotle powder (optional) 

Method

  1. 1/2 papaya (about 600g) - it’s a good idea to use a papaya that’s not quite ripe for this recipe as you don’t want the steaks going mushy. 

  2. Add all the marinade ingredients into a container and mix well. Peel the papaya and cut into ‘fillets’ it should make 3 to 4 fillets. Add the fillets to the marinade mixture. Let marinate for 6 hours or overnight. 

  3. When ready to cook heat a fry pan on medium heat. Add the fillets and cook on medium low heat for around 5 minutes each side, adding the marinade as you are cooking. Serve with your choice of sides.
